What is on the checklist
Four short sections, each with six things worth having in hand before you make any decisions about retirement.
- Know what you have: every pension listed, old employers traced, State Pension forecast checked, charges and guarantees understood, nominations up to date.
- Know what you need: a retirement age, a monthly figure, the big one-off costs, a cashflow forecast, your partner's position, inflation accounted for.
- Close the gaps: contributions and tax relief reviewed, investments matched to your timeline, consolidation considered carefully, ISAs positioned, debts on a timetable.
- Protect the plan: income protection, life and critical illness cover, a current will and lasting power of attorney, inheritance tax understood, an emergency fund, a yearly review.
